CLEVELAND-Hillcrest Hospital announced a five-year, $163 million expansion that will double the size of its emergency department and add 72 private rooms in a new patient tower. The project also includes new operating rooms, a neonatal intensive-care unit and a renovated obstetrics unit. The 398-bed community hospital is owned by the Cleveland Clinic. In a news release, clinic officials said the plan represents the largest investment the clinic has made in any of its nine community hospitals. 'This redevelopment project will not only increase patient access to the best healthcare available on Cleveland's east side, it will allow our physicians to spend more time with patients and enable our nurses and staff to work in an environment that exemplifies their professional and medical expertise,'' said Fred DeGrandis, president and chief executive officer of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals, in a news release.

MINNEAPOLIS-Fairview Health Services plans to build a 102-bed, $175 million children's hospital. The new hospital will absorb roughly half of the existing pediatric beds at Fairview's 807-bed University of Minnesota Medical Center and won't expand overall system bed capacity. No regulatory approvals are required, a Fairview spokesman said. Construction is expected to start in late 2007 or early 2008 and be completed by 2010. Fairview said it will upgrade and expand maternity services, pediatric behavioral healthcare and a neonatal intensive-care unit, which will remain at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. A Fairview spokesman said the project is part of a planned six-year, $1 billion capital investment and clinical expansion effort.
